Dr. Nolan's mission to El Salvador was a success, and we would all like to thank those of you who donated your used eyeglasses to benefit the people of El Salvador. It is amazing that the donation of a pair of old, unused eyeglasses can have such a profound effect on the lives of those who would have otherwise gone without.
This year's mission was sponsored by New England Volunteers to Optometric Services to Humanity. The staff in the eye clinic saw about 1100 patients and distributed about 1500 pairs of eyeglasses. The doctors also performed about 20 cataract surgeries.
The clinic was set up in the village of Nueva Esperanza, a small, rural community in the lower Lempa region. Besides the Eye clinic, there were clinics that were set up for General Medicine, Audiology and Gynecology, as well as a pharmacy and temporary living quarters for all of the volunteers. The people of El Salvador and in this village were very thankful for the services that missions such as these provide. The failed healthcare system in their country is a source of frustration and many people go without the most basic of health services.
Again, we thank everyone who made a donation for this mission, and we look forward to the next one!
